Rustenberg Wine
Wine from South Africa has
had an excellent reputation
all over the world for a long
time. The Rustenberg winery
is not only one of the oldest
and most beautiful farms in
the Cape region, but also one
of the best and best-known
producers in the country.
The estate is located in the
Stellenbosch wine-growing
region - almost picturesquely
situated at the foot of the
majestic Simonsberg in a
park-like landscape.
Stellenbosch is probably the
best known wine region in
South Africa and is located
about 50 kilometers east of
Cape Town, on the so-called
Western Cape. Stellenbosch
offers the best conditions for
winegrowing - not only the
fertile valleys are responsible
for this, but also the climate
and the excellent location in
which the Rustenberg grapes
shade on hot days from the
nearby Simonsberg and also
due to the proximity to the
sea coast from the cooling
effect of the Benguela current
can be refreshed. The effect
of electricity creates a
temperate maritime climate
in Stellenbosch, which is
predestined for the
production of elegant and
finely spicy wines.
The history of the South
African flagship
The Rustenberg winery has
existed since 1682 and looks
back on a long history with a
lot of tradition - the first
evidence of a sale from the
property is in the form of a
receipt for a brandy sold to a
midwife in 1692. In 1941,
Pamela and Peter Barlow
acquired the Rustenberg
winery, which their son Simon
took over in 1987 and now
runs with his wife Rozanne
and son Murray. While Simon
Barlow is responsible for the
management of the family
winery and the cultivation of
the vineyards, Rozanne takes
care of the maintenance of
the parks and Murray, as
cellar master, is responsible
for the wine production of the
Rustenberg and the
marketing. The Rustenberg
winery has been extensively
renovated in recent years;
the buildings were carefully
restored and now house the
most modern cellar facilities
that have been adapted to
the old walls with great
attention to detail.
At Rustenberg, tradition
meets innovation
When harvesting, the Barlows
attach great importance to
the separate vinification of all
parts of the grape so that the
character of each plot of the
Rustenberg can be perfectly
worked out. The harvest is
strictly selective, exclusively
by hand and in the cool
morning hours, in order to
actually process only the best
ripened grapes and to bring
the fruit fresh and crisp into
the wine cellar. Here the
wines from Murray and his
team are developed with
great care. The result - the
Rustenberg wines -
exemplifies how traditional
methods of winemaking can
be combined with the
innovative style of the new
world.
Whether the aromatic
Sauvignon Blanc, the
Chardonnays matured in
wooden barrels, the Bordeaux
cuvée 'John X. Merrimen', the
single-variety Syrah in the
Rhone style 'Buzzard Kloof' or
the top Cabernet 'Peter
Barlow' - the wines of the
flagship winery Rustenberg
are of excellent quality and
regularly rank among the
best wines in the country in
the ratings of the South
African wine pope David
Platter. |
